PPUF – Poor People’s United Fund has been in existence for 29 years. Besides working on over arching economic justice issues, PPUF provides emergency assistance to a growing number of individuals and families, giving food gift certificates to over 300 families. In December 2008 we saw about a 50% increase in requests over the prior year. Here are just two of the requests we were able to help:
“Dear PPUF, I am a mother of three children on a very limited income. Last year, their father was murdered and I have no support now. Any help you can give us will be so appreciated…”
“Dear Friends, Can you help us through the holidays? We live paycheck to paycheck and it’s been a very bad year for me and my autistic son who is 27 years old. I also have a 9 year old grandson I care for. Being so cash poor I am behind on my bills and being out of work for 3 weeks with no pay has made it impossible to catch-up. I’ve never asked anyone for help before, but my family needs help in the worst way. Christmas looks grim for us. Thank you so much.”
