Action Alert! Defend the Dreamers!
An action alert and what you can do to defend DACA, from our member Jane Doe:
ACTION ALERT Defend the Dreamers!
8,000 young immigrants put at risk
by Trump Administration decision to end DACA.
The Trump Administration, through U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, announced on September 5, 2017 that in six months it will phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which was put in place 5 years ago by then President Obama through an Executive Order. This program has provided relief to more than 7,900 Massachusetts children and young adults – and as many as 800,000 across the country – allowing them to attend college and work legally.
President Trump has said it’s up to Congress to decide the fate of these young people.
It’s also up to us to act now! JDI is committed to joining with our allies across the state and nation to protect the dignity and rights of immigrants. Moreover, ending DACA would be devastating to sexual and domestic violence survivors who may not seek help for fear of being separated from their families and communities. To this end, we will continue to advocate for humane immigration policy at both the state and federal levels.
Please join us in taking the action steps outlined below and share this alert with your networks and community members.
FEDERAL ACTION:
Take action now by contacting your members of Congress to urge them to support the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act will give young immigrants a clear, reliable path to citizenship. The Congress must act within 6 months to prevent the deportation of thousands of immigrants who may have no country to return to. Click here for details on the federal bill, sample letters, and more.
MASSACHUSETTS ACTION:
Take action now by contacting your state representatives and senators requesting that they swiftly take action on the Safe Communities Act. Within Massachusetts, we will push ever harder for state policies that make everyone feel safe and welcome regardless of immigration status, including the Safe Communities Act and legislation to extend in-state tuition to all Massachusetts high school graduates. Click here for details on the state Safe Communities Act.

For generations, people have come to the U.S. and brought their children here to pursue a better future and contribute to the fabric of our society. We will not turn our backs on you. We will continue working together toward our shared dreams of healthy and safe communities, free of racism, discrimination and xenophobia. We also want to acknowledge the leadership of many elected officials in Massachusetts who have spoken up about this atrocity and are working for the passage of state and federal legislation and taking legal action to remedy it.
Thank you for taking action now!
