ACLU’s Status of State Internet Privacy Legislations
A free and open internet is vital for our democracy and for our daily lives. In early April 2017, the Trump administration killed Obama-era FCC regulations that would have prevented internet service providers like Comcast from selling sensitive customer information without explicit opt-in consent. In response, legislators in states across the country have introduced bills to fill the gap.
The ACLU has compiled a list of the most prominent pieces of legislation from a variety of states, including Alaska, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
